80s Style Fierceness – Eva Green on Vogue

Here’s Bond Girl Eva Green on the cover of January 2008 UK Vogue. She always has that sultry, gothic thing going on. Here, she looks fierce. She looks hot. She looks majah, as Victoria Beckham might say. But, there’s something about her hair, makeup and outfit that kind of screams “1983” to me:

And I don’t think that rather lurid shade of orange they’ve used for the titles on the cover is really helping.

It’s Chrisssstmaaaasss!!

One thing I absolutely love about the new music chart system in the U.K. – whereby songs that are officially downloaded count as single or album sales – is that lots of random songs re-enter the charts. Technically, any song that’s available for download could make a comeback in the charts. So if enough of us bought Kylie’s 1987 hit, I Should Be So Lucky, it could reach number one again!

(Alternatively, if I record a song of me humming for 30 sseconds, and got it for sale on iTunes, that could officially be a song in the UK Singles Chart. The mind boggles. Really. You haven’t heard me hum.)

Alright, unlikely. But during special events or at specific times of the year, people seem to buy and download loads of past songs. So, for example, during last year’s World Cup, loads of old football songs made a comeback. (Like Three Lions, which was first released in 1996.)

Unsurprisingly, now it’s Christmas, we’ve got loads of seasonal songs appearing in the charts. The BBC News website has drawn up a list of these songs – top is Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You which has hit the dizzy heights of number 8 in the charts! Next we’ve got the absolute classic – and one of the best festive songs ever – Fairytale in New York by The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl at number 12, followed a good bit of 80s cheese, Wham!’s Last Christmas at number 23.

Here’s one of my favourite Xmas songs – Merry Christmas Everybody by Shakin’ Stevens. You can’t beat a man with an apostrophe in his name.

I give it TEN!!

In honour of Bruno Tonioli, one of the two best judges on Strictly Come Dancing (which starts again this Saturday, 6th October, BBC1, 6.15pm – tune in!!) here’s Elton John’s 1983 hit I’m Still Standing. Bruno is one of the backing dancers in the video!

The Lost Boys

Corey Feldman & Corey Haim

A new reality TV show recently started in America…so what’s new, you ask? Well, this one has the two 80s hearthrobs, Corey Haim and Corey Feldman, living together in one big house. (Along with Feldman’s wife.) Err…and that’s it. They just sort of live their lives, and stuff. Hmm, riveting, eh? They’re pitching it along the lines of a modern day “Odd Couple”.

Still, I do have a soft spot for both of them, and am mostly pleased to see them back “in the limelight”. Of course, if I had my way, we’d all still be living in some kind of 80s mania. “Still at number one for the third week…it’s Bananarama!!” Ahem. Haim used to be so cute, and now looks really beat. What a shame!

Reading the official show website, the most interesting fact I came across was how Feldman and his missus got married in 2003. Whilst starring in The Surreal Life (like Celebrity Big Brother, but fancier house, and they’re allowed out and about), producers persuaded him to hold the wedding on the last show of the series. Okay, a little strange…til you read that the ceremony was co-officiated by Feldman’s co-star…MC Hammer!!

COREY FELDMAN’S WEDDING WAS OFFICIATED BY MC HAMMER!

Yeah, I had to write it in caps so everyone can comprehend and muse over that one for a while.
